April’s 5 Most Read Stories

My focus in April was to address some of the issues raised by the SWOT Analysis of my blog. Many of the simple changes took place behind the scenes, such as SEO and analytics. The long-term success of the blog requires focused writing. To address that issue, I implemented an Editorial Calendar that helps me drive the articles you read here. While I have not finished my to-do list, I have been able to improve the site significantly during April.

  • Visitors increased 118.5% over March
  • Inbound links improved by 30% over March
  • Alexia traffic improved to the Top 6.57% of all websites
  • Technorati ranking improved to the Top 0.54% of all blogs

Most importantly, April’s 5 Most Read Stories now reflect my strategic communication theme.

Crimson Tide Scores Marketing Touchdown with A-Day Game

My analysis of the University of Alabama’s A-Day telecast on ESPN drew more visits in April than did my site’s homepage. This was the result of three major Crimson Tide fan sites linking directly to the article shortly after the post went live a midnight on April 19th. In fact, within six hours of posting the analysis, more than 500 individuals read my article. According to Google Analytics, I drew more visitors from the State of Alabama in April than anywhere else on Earth. Roll Tide.

Using Social Media in a Public Health Emergency

With the outbreak of Mexican Swine Flu, my white paper on Using Social Media in a Public Health Emergency drew many readers. Much of the readership came from organic search engine traffic, which indicates decent SEO on my part.

Ray Semplinski for Crest Hill Mayor

I wasn’t surprised to see this story slip from the most read story in March to Number Three in April. What surprised me, though, was Illinois’ municipal elections took place on April 8, 2009. After the election, readership for this story died within a week. Still, enough people from Crest Hill visited in those few days to keep this story in the Top Five.

Swine Flu Action Items for Public Information Officers

Another article that benefitted from Mexican Swine Flu was this quick Action Items for Public Information Officers. Combining organic search engine traffic, Twitter traffic, and links from bloggers in the crisis communication field, this article was the fastest riser of anything I wrote this month. Considering it was published three days before the end of the month, I was very happy.

Newspaper Revenue Trend Line Reconsidered

The second of two articles discussing newspaper advertising revenue vs. online advertising revenue, this story has been popular among media buyers, planners, and advertising agencies.
