5: What Cigarette Do You Smoke, Doctor? (c. 1958)
Why, Camel, of course!
4: To a Smoker, It’s a Kent (c. 1966)
Tobacco companies never targeted the youngsters, did they?
3: Dick Van Dyke Show, Sponsored by Kent (c. 1962)
Mary Tyler Moore smoked?
2: I Love Lucy, sponsored by Phillip Morris (c. 1954)
It’s 1954. Eisenhour is in the White House. What’s more controversial: A) Married couples sharing the same bedroom, or B) Hollywood Stars shilling Cancer Sticks?
Lucy: Don’t say “cigarette,” say “Phillip Morris.”
1: Flintstones Sponsored by Winston (c. 1960)
I think the lede says more about the period than the fact that Fred and Barney are shilling Winstons.
Barney: I hate to see them work so hard.
Fred: Yeah, me too. Let’s go around back where we can’t see ‘em.
