When Eastern Avenue was home to Joliet’s most notable industrialists, doctors, lawyers, and politicians, locals called the street “Silk Stocking Row.” The area may not be the most fashionable address today, but the homes, such as the Jacob Henry mansion remain as impressive as ever.
Built in 1873 by railroad magnate Jacob A. Henry, the original mansion boasted of 40 rooms and took up more than 16,800 square feet. Today, residents rent the mansion for banquets and special occasions.
The home (along with the neighborhood) is part of the National Register of Historic Places.
