At the end of the nineteenth century, many ethnic Slovenians left the Austro-Hungarian Empire for America. A great number settled in Joliet, where, in 1891, they established St. Joseph’s Parish.

Parishioners built a second church in 1905 as the community grew larger. Today, St. Joseph’s remains the only Catholic Church in the Diocese of Joliet that celebrates Mass in the Slovenian language.
